It's Been a While

...and no I’m not talking about the Staind song, don’t worry. I’ve been getting ready for the Buyers Market of American Craft in August. It’s a wholesale show so it’s hard to get in if you just want to visit, but if you do just let me know and I can probably make it happen.

New pieces in the Silhouettes section. They’re my favorite so far.

A couple weeks ago I went to the Jersey shore with Halli and Lydia to see my extended family. We went to the amusement park on the boardwalk one night and rode a few rides. That ferris wheel might not look like much but when you’re at the top and the winds are 25 mph it’s almost petrifying.

PMA Craft Show

Hi everyone. I just received word today that I’ve been accepted into the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show in November. It’s a beautiful show and I’m really excited to be able to be there. More info in the coming months.

Oh and thanks to Chap we now have a website for our new studios. Check it out at www.parttimestudios.com.

Movin' On Up

Well I’ve moved all my equipment out of the basement of my dad’s barn and into a warehouse space in Old Kensington in Philadelphia. I’m sharing the space with twelve other creative types/friends. It’s pretty much a dream come true and I’m really excited about the possibilities that this place provides. You can see some pictures of us building our walls here.

D.C. and Me

I got back from the Smithsonian show late last night and I was exhausted. Six hours of set up, forty four total hours of interaction with show go-ers, three and a half hours of breakdown, and a three hour drive home will wear a guy out. But it was all worth it because it was an amazing experience. Halli and I met a lot of great people and saw some incredible work. Check out some of our pictures right here.

South Magazine Article

Well I got a copy of The South Magazine that I’m in. There weren’t really a lot of untruths. The only thing is that on the first line they called me a “local artist”. I used to live in Savannah, but now I live in Philadelphia. Anyway click the icon below to download a PDF of the article. You can zoom in pretty far.

Leaving for the Smithsonian Craft Show tomorrow morning. Hopefully I’ll get to meet some great people, see some great work, and maybe even sell something. Check back next week for photos.

Also there are some new pieces up in the Sculpture section, so check em out!

If You Live in Savannah...

Go pick up a copy of the new issue of The South Magazine. I’m featured in an article by Vince Martin (really nice guy incidentally). I actually haven’t read the final piece yet, but Vince called me today to tell me the editor changed a few things and the changes might be untrue. Freedom of the press? Check back soon because I’ll scan the article and put it on here so all the yankees can read it. I also might be clearing up any untruths.

Also I’m leaving for the Smithsonian show in one week so it’s crunch time. Back to it.

Surprise Exhibition

I just found myself in the Virtual Emerging Artists exhibit on Craft in America’s website. Check it out here. There’s a lot of good work on there.

A small aside: I haven’t really drawn or painted anything in a while. Maybe even since college. Here’s a watercolor of some guts that I just did for the inside of a new sculpture. Two dimensions are hard work!

Life Changes

Since I moved back north from Savannah I’ve been staying with my parents so I could try to save some money. That hasn’t worked as well as I thought cause I’ve had to shovel over a lot of money for the ACC and Smithsonian shows. And now, it’s time to go. I’m moving into Northern Liberties in Philly with my friends Ryan and Kyle. Here’s a photo of our new apartment right between a bar and I-95:

While walking to take the photo of the apartment I passed this creepy sweetness in a store window:

In other news this person lives across the street from a Bank of America:

Back from B-More

Returned last night from the Baltimore show with the one and only Halligan Norris. We met a lot of great people and saw a lot of great work. Here are a few pictures of my booth:

And this gem of Halli with an itch:

Here are some very nice people we got to know who make some great work:

Figs & Ginger
Randall Darwall
Dolan Geiman
Megan Auman
Ruth Marks
Graceann Warn
Biba Schutz

This is the final countdown...

Sing the above title like the band Europe and you’ve got the right idea. My dad and I are leaving for the American Craft Show in about a half hour. Here’s a shot of the truck.

Also I put up a lot of new jewelry and sculpture last night. There are a couple small details still missing, but check it out.

Check back soon for pictures from the Baltimore show.

American Craft Show info

I’ll be showing at the American Craft Show in Baltimore next week, during the wholesale days February 19-21. Come see me in booth 4505. Lots of new work this year. Here’s a small sample…

New year...new site

Thanks to my good friend Chap for helping me build this gem. (Well actually I mostly sat around eating oreos while he worked.) Anyway the shopping cart is not functional yet because of some problems at paypal.

If you see anything you don’t like please (blame it on Chap, then) get in touch.

Two pieces of small news

Two pieces of small news have just entered the feed room…

One) I was recently blogged (although very, very briefly) along with Halligan. You can see the post here. I’m the small link below all of Halli’s full color glory.

Two) Things are pretty crazy around here at Adam Smith art camp. I’ve been frantically designing and making an expansion on the tintype pin in preparation for the American Craft Show. I’m turning it into a small line that is a little darker than my other jewelry. I had a problem for a little while where I would sacrifice my vision for what I thought was more marketable. That didn’t work like I thought it would, and it made me unhappy, so now I’m doing what I want. And it is certainly making me happy.

A belated merry Christmas

First off, a belated merry Christmas and happy new year. OK now that that’s done…

I was invited to participate in a benefit show for the Poyama Day Treatment Center in Independence, Oregon. It is a psychiatric treatment center for emotionally disturbed children. The host gallery is Mary Lou Zeek Gallery in Salem, Oregon.

They sent 100 artists an 8” x 8” x 2” box to do whatever we wanted with. We were also given a series of questions which we were to present to a young person between 3 and 12 and he was to answer as many as he wanted. My guy was Harrison Kopp of Towamencin, PA. He gave me a great answer. Thanks Harrison.

The show will be up February 5, 2008 – March 1, 2008. There will be a silent auction in the gallery and on their website and all of the money will go to Poyama. Photos of the piece below.

New piece up in the sculptural section

New piece up in the sculptural section Just finished it Thanksgiving morning.

Also I’m participating in a small Christmas show at Vagabond Boutique in Philadelphia. The show will be December 14th (friday). Not sure of the time….if I were a guessin’ man I’d probably say seven-ish.

Some very exciting news

Some very exciting news has just come my way. I’ve been accepted into the Smithsonian Craft Show, which is an honor. In fact, below is a picture of my reaction when I found out.

I've been blogged

I’ve been blogged. So have Halli and Josh. The blog is called “The Bedlam of Beefy” and is maintained by one very excitable “Uncle Beefy”. Check it out here

I now live back in Pennsylvania

I now live back in Pennsylvania. I moved back a couple weeks ago. New studio space should be up and running for the first time this evening. Pretty excited to start making things again. Moving really sucks the creativity out of you.

First images of new work!

First images of new work! These are the beginnings of a new series (not sure what to call it yet.) They’re all one-of-a-kind and constructed of copper and/or brass with steel pins. The images are all original antique photographs under encaustic. I love making these and see myself making them for quite a long time.

The second new series are these necklaces. These are all prototypes, the rest of the series will use more streamlined frames. They will be available in brass or silver frames all with silver chains. Maybe in the future I’ll be able to step it up to gold. The glass pieces are watch covers (called watch crystals). Everything inside will be mostly watch parts, especially gears. Dimensions vary from wristwatch size to pocketwatch size.

Pricing on all this will be available soon. If you have any feedback on the new work I’d love to hear it.
